A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
